CORN REFINERS APPLAUD PASSAGE OF PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY ACT

WASHINGTON, DC – The Corn Refiners Association, Inc. (CRA) today applauds passage of the Personal Responsibility in Food Consumption Act (H.R. 339), prohibiting frivolous obesity lawsuits filed by predatory lawyers against food manufacturers and servers.

“This common sense measure ultimately protects the jobs of thousands of workers who grow, refine, market, and serve food products in America today,” said Audrae Erickson, president of the Corn Refiners Association.  “Frivolous lawsuits will not reduce the alarming rise of obesity in America; moderation in food consumption and increased physical activity will.”

The bill, sponsored by Representative Ric Keller (R-FL) passed the House by a vote of 276 to 139.

A companion bill, "The Commonsense Consumption Act" (S.1428) was introduced in the Senate by Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY).  Hearings were held late last year in the Committee on Judiciary Subcommittee on Administrative Oversight and the Courts.
